Microsoft has obtained a patent to “block objectionable content” from being shared online, including that which infringes on copyrights, according to a report by TorrentFreak.

The patent also includes the ability to identify repeat offenders who share protected files.

The report noted that it is not only torrent sites where pirated content can be shared, with platforms like Facebook, Google Drive, and Microsoft’s OneDrive open to abuse.

If pirated content is shared via a cloud storage product, the company hosting the product cannot always “simply delete” the content.

The patent is titled “Disabling prohibited content and identifying repeat offenders in service provider storage systems”, and looks to address this issue.

The patent allows Microsoft to identify and flag repeat offenders who share objectionable content, which may result in account privileges being suspended or terminated.
